Tyne Dock Arches

Tyne Dock Arches carried the coal trains from the local collieries to the Tyne Dock for shipping around the country and the World. They were demolished in 1977 to make way for a new wider road into the heart of the town.
It seems like they were totally over-engineered in the first place, there were four in total and each was about 15m wide. There only purpose was to allow a fairly small road (shown in yellow) to pass through, as you can see circled in red on this map from 1938. Maybe there was only one to begin with and planners just kept adding more and more, although I can't confirm this.
